running the race

About a week and a half ago, I completed a 10 km charity run (yes yes, I can see your eyeballs popping out of their sockets). I wasn't the first, but I wasn't the last either. I finished 331 out of 336 runners, and I'm proud to have finished the race without stopping or dropping out halfway. I remember all along the way, the road always seemed too long, the weather was never consistently warm and sunny (more often than not, it was windy and slightly cold), my lungs were being unfriendly and didn't seem to want to work properly, oh and not to mention the intermittent thought of suddenly dropping to the ground struggling for breath and being rushed into the ambulance on a stretcher. It was not an easy run at that point in time, but retrospectively, it was a great run, not only thinking about it charity-wise, but also for my endurance, physically and mentally. My mindset and my goal were crucial in the race. Giving in to the temptations that lined the race course could have cost me, not only my prize (my little participation medal, haha), but also my goal.

I think of it a little like the race we're running everyday. The race for God. It's never easy and you are always struggling against something or other. But when the times are good (i.e. when the sun's all warm), you seem to get by that inch much easier. There are also the times when you get thoughts of dropping out of your race, the temptation to take the easy way out. It is never easy to persevere and keep your pace all the way, but it is important to keep your focus always, on your goal, your God. You don't need to be the first or the last to be noticed (you know how the people who come in the middle just seem like part of the crowd?), because whatever position you come in, God will always be there with His welcoming arms to embrace you.

So, how are you running your race?

Will I be able to hear you say this one day?:
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." - 2 Timothy 4:7
